Overview

How can you enable subject leaders to excel in your school?

This course gives subject leaders the skills they need to articulate their own educational vision and use this to inform curriculum design, subject enrichment and subject-level interventions designed to raise achievement. 

The course was developed in partnership with Mike Gershon, a trainer whose online resources have been viewed and downloaded more than 3.5 million times.

Audience

This course is suitable for heads of department and subject leaders in primary and secondary schools. It consists of four sessions that can be easily adapted to the timings and needs of your school.

Sessions in detail

Session 1 - Refining your vision 

Objectives:

  • Develop and refine a vision for subject leadership
  • Understand a range of ways to communicate visions for maximum effect
  • Analyse factors that might challenge visions and explore how to overcome these
Session 2 - Developing a broad and balanced curriculum
Objectives:
  • Audit an area of existing curriculum provision
  • Identify what innovation looks like and opportunities for innovation
  • Examine ‘action-oriented’ roles and explore how these can support curriculum innovation
Session 3 - Proactive intervention
Objectives:
  • Understand what signals are and how to use them
  • Examine the benefits of question-level analysis and connect these benefits to effective decision-making
  • Analyse the Education Endowment Foundation’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit
  • Reflect on current processes for making decisions about interventions
Session 4 - Enriching the student experience 
Objectives:
  • Think creatively about the potential for enrichment in your particular subject
  • Develop some possible enrichment strategies, activities and techniques
  • Turn ideas into a realistic enrichment plan covering extracurricular, in-lesson and homework-based enrichment
